The figure in positive and negative space

In progress studio work exploring ideas related to the positive and negative space around figures. Conceptually I’m working with the idea of positive space being “IRL” (in real life), and negative space being virtual or cyber space. Thus these works are somehow exploring through painting, the nature of the relationship between figuration (the body) and virtual/cyber space. The male figures are taken from sports images and relate to the athlete as the modern day warrior. The female figures are taken from advertising and fashion imagery. Both sources present idealized figures in idealized spaces. These small studies are 12″ x 10″ utilizing graphite, oil, and soft wax on board.
