Chimeric Terrain – Exhibition Dec. 4-14 in NYC

Chimeric Terrain
Studio 9D, 508 W 26th St, 9th Floor, New York City
December 4-14, 2025
Opening Reception: December 4, 2-6 pm | Artist Tour: December 13, 2-6 pm.

Studio 9D is pleased to present Chimeric Terrain, a group exhibition featuring works by Richard Yu-Tang Lee, Biliana Velkova and Jennifer Tazewell Mawby. Running from December 4 to 14, the exhibition invites viewers into imaginative landscapes shaped by drawing, storytelling, and mythmaking.

Through intricate and evocative works, the artists explore the duality of fantastical worldbuilding and narrative construction. Drawing serves as a central medium for each artist, offering a space where words and images transform one another and evolve into layered, symbolic narratives.

Chimeric Terrain delves into the intimate relationship between drawing and storytelling, showcasing mythical beings, mystical reinterpretations of nature, and the rationalization of lived experiences through archetypal lenses. The exhibition critically examines how myths and archetypes that are products of human imagination bridge the divide between the known and the unknown.

Infused with magical realism and otherworldly imagery, the works challenge conventional perceptions of reality and open portals to realms beyond the ordinary. These themes resonate with universal aspects of human experience, revealing how storytelling can reconcile personal struggles within broader cultural narratives.

Richard Yu-Tang Lee is an Asian American multidisciplinary artist who practices drawing/painting, mask making, sculpture, and performance. His work investigates the experience of time and earthly phenomena, memory, and the universality of grief. A Chicago native, Lee recently returned from Portland, ME, where he and his wife, Claire Guyer completed a four-year long collaborative performance art piece called “Little Brother Chinese Food,”  which filtered logistics, manufacturing, and marketing –typically thought of as commercial, non-creative aspects of the modern economic landscape– through an artistic lens that transformed the building of a brand into a gesamtkunstwerk. Lee is mounting his first museum exhibition with the Rochester Museum of Fine Art in the summer of 2026.
